Thanks to Cheetah's initiative ;D
I've been thinking about a couple of things to do, like:
Freelancer wasn't designed for any of these games, but with a little imagination and enough players its all possible. Below are some suggestions on how we could do each of these games, all with the idea that everything takes place in the same system...
Capture the Flag
2 teams, 2 referees, each team docks at their own base before start. After start you may not dock, not even at your own base. Each referee holds position near the dock of their assigned base with lots of nomad blasters (flags) in his cargo. If a team member makes it to the enemy base, he/she has to initiate a trade with the ref for 1 blaster "the flag". The ref will announce to his team who has "the flag" when the blaster has been obtained. The ref will not trade with anyone else untill the person he traded the flag to dies. The person with the flag in cargo must go back to his home base and trade it with the ref there, the ref will award his team 1 point after successfull delivery of the "flag" and notify the other ref so he/she may trade 1 flag with the first person who trades for 1. The flag carrier should also inform the team he/she has the flag so they know who to protect. Referees talk to eachother to keep score in sync and end the match after a predefined number of flags (say 10) have been captured by one of the teams. Team with the most flags wins ofcourse
Variations:
Multiple systems, home base of teams could be set to different systems.
More teams, you could add teams by also adding a ref with flags for each new team.
Team Death Match
2 teams and 2 referees, each team docks at their own base before start. After start you may not dock, not even at your own base, referees hover outside the base to verify this doesn't happen. Teams fight eachother and when someone dies he/she ends up in their own base where they may restock and rejoin the fight. Referees can keep score of both teams ( 1 point per kill ), preferably they are grouped so they can communicate scores when a player dies. Referees also call the start and end of the match, for instance 20 minutes per match. Team with most points wins the match. At first I would try this in a system with bases close together (like planet crete and tripoli shipyard). In order to keep things managable for the referees, system chat is prohibited as well as private chat to refs during the match. each team should create a group and use the group channel to communicate with eachother.
Variations:
More teams. instead of 2 teams we could make 3 or 4 teams, this also means we need an extra ref for each team.
Multi system. With more teams we could also use more than 1 system, each team could have its own system.
King of the Hill
2 referees, 2 teams, each team docks at their own base before start. One of the refs flies out to a nearby station, planet, wreck or whatever's on the map and than announces to both teams where he/she is (the hill). The first team to appear at the scene has "captured the hill" (as soon as the ref sees a ship coming in range of his). This team holds the hill as long as it has players on the hill, the other team will have to kill or chase away all enemy ships to recapture the hill. The ref will keep track of who ownes the hill and how long they have been there, after say 5 minutes the hill will be in a different location (the 2nd ref flew to it while the other hill was "active"), the other ref will announce the location of the new hill and count down another 5 min before its relocated again. An entire match could have 4 hill relocations, the winning team will be the team with the most time on the hill. ;D
announcements of a new hill location will either be in system chat or to the leader of a team in case multiple systems are beeing used, in this case each ref will announce this to their assigned teams (refs let eachother know what the new location is before time is up and sync their announcements by using their group channel) Team leaders will notify their group of the new hill location when ref informed them.
Variations:
Multipe teams and multiple systems, even with more teams 2 refs should be enough to keep score announcements of new hill locations would require refs to talk to more than 1 team leader in this case.
Jail Break
2 referees, 2 teams, each team docks at their enemies base before start and fly to their own base (no dock). Referees dock at the base of their assigned teams before start. After start you may not dock, not even at your own base. During the match, refs hover outside the dock of their assigned team and hold position (viewing the dock) If a team member gets killed, he/she will end up at the enemies base (jail) from which he/she may not escape, ref watches the dock to make sure this doesn't happen. Team members can be freed from the jail by killing the ref watching the dock, the ref does not fight back, in fact he/she flies a starflier to make it easy to destroy. When the ref is in dock, the team members may escape the enemy base. As soon as the ref leaves the dock, the jail is closed and members may not escape anymore. The ref may be killed again immediatelly after launch, also base killing rules do not apply here. If the entire team is caught in jail, the other team gets awarded 1 point and the game is reset (teams take up their starting locations). This is played till a max (say 10 points) is reached.
Variations:
Mutiple systems, home bases are located in different systems.
Multiple teams, since you have to dock at the jail its not possible to do this with more than 2 teams.
Final thoughts
We'll need about 8 players (including refs) to make it interresting. We should rotate refs so that everyone will get a chance at playing, but also at beeing ref. Just have to try to see if it works or not.
