Hello everybody This channel is mainly for me getting FL to run on Vista. Mighty Grizz will explain, and I will oblige ;D Just in case someone wants to do the same, feel free to participate. This is my solution for the "no FL under Vista"-problem. Just installed Linux (Ubuntu 8.10) and will install FL there. So, you know where we stand Grizz, I just installed and updated Linux. What to do now?

Ok... now its gets tough!! <joke> things to remember Linux is case sensitive and El is running Ubuntu 8.10 intrepid: To run FL you are going to need wine .... not the drink although it may help to have some handy lol You want the latest version thats not in the Ubuntu repositories .. yet. development release 1.1.16 : Step 1:Open the Software Sources menu by going to System->Administration->Software Sources. Then select the Third Party Software tab and click Add. It may ask you for your password, be kind and give it lol Step 2:Copy and paste the following into the box: deb wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt intrepid main #WineHQ - Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex"Click ok .. Step 3:dowload the following key (right click on the link and save it as): wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/Scott%20Ritchie.gpgSave it to your desktop.. Step 4:open the Authentication tab on the software sources box, click import key file, and select the key file you just saved (Scott Ritchie.gpg). you will have to navigate to it. Then close the software sources. Step 5:Goto Applications > Acessories > Terminal .. and run a terminal .. its a bit like a DOS box type in: sudo apt-get updateit will ask you for your password .. be nice and do so lol then type in: sudo apt-get install wineThis will install wine on your system. When the install is complete type: winecfgThis will then set up the wine structure and open the wine setup app window, click on audio let it decide on a setting then check the "About" tab reads 1.1.16 .. click apply and exit. If you now go to Applications and look you will now see the wine folder .. This is wine now set up in its basic state ready for part 2Let me know when you have got this far.More when you are ready. ;D

Just in case this is important. It gave me the following "errors" at the end of the installation: fixme:mixer:ALSA_MixerInit No master control found on HDA ATI HDMI, disabling mixer fixme:jack:JACK_drvLoad error loading the jack library libjack.so.0, please install this library to use jack Before that there where various "not found"s, but as far as I can judge all symbols. Otherwise all fine, as far as I can judge that More please

Otherwise all fine, as far as I can judge that More please Well ... if there were no big bangs, smoke streaming from your PC and all your hair did not fall out then DON'T Panic .. simply ignore them Ok Part 2You will now need Winetricks ... no, not the "things" Nos does after a few glasses of it Step 1:open up a terminal again, Goto Applications > Accessories > Terminal .. and run a terminal and type or cut and paste the following: sudo apt-get install cabextractWhen thats done type or cut and paste the following: wget www.kegel.com/wine/winetricksWhen thats done type or cut and paste the following: sh winetricks directx9this will now install Directx9 into your Wine Windows Wrapper, it solves several problems all at once and prevents the need for importing individual DLL's and then setting them up into wine. You may find at the end of the DX9 install it will just sit there and pushing finish will not do anything .. give it a few minutes and then just end it. Step 2:If you now go into applications > wine > Wine config and then click on the libraries tab you should see a whole lot of DLL's and files now in the main window all set to native or builtin. Exit configure wine Step 3:Ok .. pop in your FL install game disk .. a box should pop up saying: This medium contains software intended to be automatically started. Would you like to run it?Simply click cancel. A little FL_v1 icon should be on your desktop, double click on it to open up a window with its contents. Find the setup.exe and right click on it, select: "Open With Wine Windows Program Loader" install FL, I suggest just going with defaults by clicking express install. Step 4:When the install has finished you should have several new icons on your desktop and a FL folder in applications > wine > Programs > Microsoft Games > Freelancer Now go back into applications > wine > Wine config: click the Applications tab Add new Application Navigate to Program files > Microsoft Games > Freelancer > EXE > And select the freelancer.exe file to add it. Freelancer.exe will now appear below the word Default .. click on it to highlight it and then click the Graphics tab: Check the box's for allowing DX9 to prevent the mouse leaving the window and the box for run in a virtual desktop, set this to 1024 x 768 for now. ( am doing this from memory so the check box's maybe called something slightly different lol ) Step 5:Ok .. now run FL via the desktop icon or from the programs folder in the wine folder under applications If all goes well it should run in a 1024 x 768 virtual desktop. you will notice the sound probs, we will deal with them as best we can later. have a check about and when you are up to this point we will move on to Part 3.

Done Runs so far, and the sound is not thaaaat bad. Sound is hanging sometimes, musik nearly always. But that's not the important thing, important is that I can run FL on my Laptop Btw., what would be important for me is the Mod Manager. I just installed it and it runs, but doesn't work properly... Just to make my priorities clear. If another order is necessary, I don't mind

Done Runs so far, and the sound is not thaaaat bad. Sound is hanging sometimes, musik nearly always. But that's not the important thing, important is that I can run FL on my Laptop ok .. so all ok up to this point... ok Part 3:Step 1:Run FL. If the music stuttering is getting on your nerves go into options > Aduio and turn the music volume alllllll the way down .. thats Quick fix for now number 3 lol Click on multiplayer, then yes then internet ... here when you first run a new install of FL you should see a box telling you about multiplayer ID's Under that box is another box, and in that box should be a long code .. Yes ? ok click create and move onto step 3Step 2NOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooo no number OMG !!!!! Don't panic, FL has a glitch and this should be easily fixed by installing the 1.1v patch from Microsoft. Right click the link below and save the patch to your desktop. download.microsoft.com/download/5/4/2/542a372f-d540-468d-a653-2cdced8d1d0d/flpatch.exeAfter it has downloaded right click the file and "Open With Wine Windows Program Loader" Simply follow along and install the patch, repeat step 1, IF still no joy PANIC !!! and let me know and we will have to solve it. Step 3:Ok .. so thats FL up and running, and with a multiplayer ID .. no global list server though, so: Exit Freelancer. open up a terminal again, Goto Applications > Accessories > Terminal .. and run a terminal and type or cut and paste the following (all one sentence): wine /home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Microsoft\ Games/Freelancer/EXE/Freelancer.exe -s80.126.82.2:2302 You will see errors in the terminal window, do as I do ... ignore them for now lol Now the above command line should run FL up and when you go to multiplayer, the EU server should now be visible. Remember this is to test your internet connectivity, you are not running the mod yet. See if you can log in and have a little play around, expect some lag and sound probs .. again we will tweak these later as best we can. Let me know when you have got to this stage and we will move on to Part 4

command line doesn't work wine: cannot find '/home/user/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Freelancer/EXE/Freelancer.exe' my bad should have been more clear ... change the "user" to what ever name you login into linux with that is if you are harry then it would be wine /home/ harry/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Microsoft\ Games/Freelancer/EXE/Freelancer.exe -s80.126.82.2:2302 and this only works on the unmodded FL ...

yeah, starting up with: wine /home/elatan/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Microsoft\ Games/Freelancer/EXE/Freelancer.exe -s80.126.82.2:2302 Getting a lot of screen interference, which goes away when I minimise the terminal in the background.... but no Server on LAN or Internet *edit: It still says version 1.0 although I ran the patch.... that might be the problem?

Not EU's Current IP, lol its from a file I made when I tried to create a local GLS work around .. again my bad ... TRY ... tada .. wine /home/elatan/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Microsoft\ Games/Freelancer/EXE/Freelancer.exe -s82.95.219.254:2302
