Why do I lag on this server?
Lag can be difficult to eliminate, sometimes its simply not possible at all. Below are a few reasons why lag occurs:
What can I do reduce my lag?
There are a few things you could do in order to improve your connection to the server, all other things are beond your control:
I have a very fast internet connection allready
The max speed of your internet connection is irrelevant in this equation. High speed connection does not equal timely delivery of packets, most broadband connections impose a considderable delay on your data. Sure you're able to pull large amounts of data through it in a small period of time, but this is of no use when it arrives 1 second late (which is almost impossible for you to measure but becomes an issue when you play online). Dont think just because you have a fast internet connection you can afford to put graphic detail on max and run some other programs in the background as well. Even the fastest computers out there WITH fiber optic internet connections will lag this way so try the steps described here to reduce lag. This is especially true when you're flying in a heavy populated area (either npc or real players).
Whats wrong with my firewall?
Most firewalls ( like ZoneAlarm ) sit on top of your network drivers which means that all network traffic will pass through the firewall "drivers". This means that all traffic is filtered even if you turn your firewall off!! This results in delays that could cause you to lag, one solution would be to deinstall the firewall entirely but that would leave you unprotected. I recommend you replace it with Outpost Firewall instead, this is a very fast firewall, easy to use, very secure. If you want technical details on why and how this firewall is better, visit their site at www.agnitum.com.
I tried everything and I still lag
Its possible the server is simply too busy when you try to play, try it again at a time when its not so busy. Some players can lag you if they use mods/cheats, wait till they leave the server to see if it gets better for you. If you even lag when you're the only one online, then you are unfortunatelly one of those people for whom lag on this server can't be fixed.
Lag can be difficult to eliminate, sometimes its simply not possible at all. Below are a few reasons why lag occurs:
- Distance, when you are at a location far from the server ( Server is based in the Netherlands ).
- Connection, you have a slow connection or data gets delayed ( happens alot on shared lines )
- Applications in the background use network resources ( MSN messenger / ICQ / kazaa / etc. )
- You have a software firewall installed ( ZoneAlarm / Tiny Personal Firewall / Sygate Personal Firewall / etc. )
- You're on the internet ( timely delivery of data on the internet is not guaranteed, anything can happen )
- You're using mods, mods will make you and the server lag so please turn them off.
- Server lags ( if alot of players are online and all engaged in battle, the server can start lagging )
What can I do reduce my lag?
There are a few things you could do in order to improve your connection to the server, all other things are beond your control:
- Close all other programs while playing freelancer, especially ICQ, MSN messenger, kazza and game voice.
- Reduce your graphics, set a lower detail and/or resolution in the game.
- Get rid of your old firewall and start using a faster one ( I recommend Outpost Firewall )
- Disable all your mods ( If you have used DeathMatch mod, first dock your char outside that system )
- Get a faster connection ( minimum delay, ask your provider for details )
- Add internal memory, 512MB RAM minimum is highly recommended.
